Early Childhood Development
"Head Start - Early Start - Better Future"
Early childhood years are very important for children and their families.
When children experience success in responsive, nurturing programs, they gain essential skills and knowledge for life
long learning. When parents experience success, they learn to be confident partners with teachers and strong
advocates for their families.
Head Start began in 1965 as part of President Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty". Federally funded by the United States
Department of Health and Human Services, this early childhood program for income eligible, 3 to 5 year old children and their families
continues to receive strong support.
Research shows that Head Start produces long term benefits and significant cost savings by reducing grade retentions, school dropouts,
delinquency, substance abuse, and referrals to special education.
