Head Start Services
Head Start Curriculum
The Head Start program supports a balanced approach of teacher directed and child
directed activities in the classroom. The primary goal of the education philosophy is to provide
children with an environment that encourages hands-on exploration. Interest areas are designed to
provide experiences in the eight (8) domains of learning and encourage discussion about cultural diversity,
health, mental health, nutrition, and disabilities. Degreed teaching staff members expand on
children's interests, enhance investigative and problem-solving skills and increase language,
math, and science skills.
Health and Disability Services
The Head Start program has developed a comprehensive system for adhering to ongoing preventative
health care practices as well as providing prompt intervention for needs as they arise. This system begins with the
application when parents or guardians complete a Health History Nutrition form, Emergency Treatment and Transportation form
and any pertinent Release of Information forms necessary for medical, dental, nutritional or special services needs.
Child health and safety is ensured through the use of effective health emergency procedures as well as
on-going staff training. Nutritional needs are identified with cultural and ethnic preferences
taken into consideration.
Head Start staff work to increase parent and child knowledge of making healthy nutritional choices;
increase the frequency of structured movement activities; and screen children at least twice
each year to monitor height, weight and BMI.
Family and Community Partnerships
Head Start offers services and support for the entire family. Parents are our partners
and Parent Involvement is the foundation of Head Start. We utilize a comprehensive,
strength-based, family systems approach in working with each family. Through partnerships
with families and community resources, Head Start staff empowers family members to achieve
their goals of economic and emotional self-sufficiency.
The Head Start program's ultimate goal is to do what is best for children and families.
To continue to meet this goal in all areas of services for children and families,
Head Start will take the lead in recognizing and promoting the important role a male plays
in the overall development of children. In doing so, Head Start promises to be
supportive to males involved in the Head Start program and in the lives of children by:
- Forming positive working relationships with males,
- Creating friendly environments for males
- Providing special events and/or trainings for males
- Making necessary referral for males to other agencies
- Supporting males involved in their child's development
