Families today are increasingly challenged in their efforts to attain and sustain economic and emotional
self-sufficiency. The increase of non-traditional households as well as a decline in the
availability of living-wages jobs places enormous stress on families in Central Wisconsin.
Families need help to improve their job skills, to strengthen parenting and other life
skills, and access resources necessary for self-sufficiency.
The Human Development Department addresses these issues through a number of programs:
Skills Enhancement:
a locally-designed workforce development program that assists
working, low-income individuals obtain the skills needed to compete for living wage jobs.
Fresh Start:
provides at-risk youth an opportunity to work toward their high school
equivalency diploma, pursue post-secondary educational opportunities, and develop
workplace and life skills.
Domestic Abuse Outreach:
offers intervention and support services through offices
in Stevens Point, Waupaca and Wautoma as well as through the Family Crisis Center in Stevens Point.
Family Crisis Center:
provides emergency shelter for domestic victims and their children as well as a full continuum of advocacy and supportive services.
Family Resource Center:
offers parenting education, anger management classes,and a safe exchange center for parents with joint custody.
Katie Beckett Project:
provides local determination for eligibility for the Katie Beckett Medical Assistance Program.
Hmong and Hispanic Services:
provide advocacy, interpretation and citizenship assistance
to Hmong households, and advocacy, interpretation and health education services to Hispanic households.
Sexual Assault Victim Services:
provide assistance to victims of sexual violence and their families.
Mental Health Navigation:
reduces barriers to accessing both formal and informal mental health services, and increases follow-through with medications and appointments.
Project TEAM (Family Mentoring):
matches low-income families seeking to become
economically and emotionally self-sufficient with volunteer mentors to assist them in
establishing goals and achieving specific skills, customized to each family's circumstance.
